New Life Resolutions

Eat better, exercise more, give up caffeine. All great New Year's Resolutions that look good on paper and will undoubtedly be broken by March.

I found one area that I wanted to improve upon and made a resolution to be a better person, regardless of the time of year. This past year I started in November, about 2 weeks before Thanksgiving.

I will stop judging people.

The shower

During his bath he raised up the stopper on the bath spout so that he could have a shower. He wanted to turn the water on himself so he started pushing the handle and I helped him when he couldn't reach anymore. The water came on.

Toddler-proof that iPad

We have all done it. Offer your iPad to your toddler so you can have 10 minutes of quiet to actually get something done or handed your toddler your iPhone to stem a tantrum while waiting in line at the DMV. I won't judge you, I've done it too. I am not anti-technology with kids, as long as the sessions are moderated and far between I'm perfectly fine with allowing O to use my iPad.  C'mon, that thing's been a lifesaver, am I right?

So, do you have the same problem that I have with them, that home button is just too tempting for the little toddler fingers to ignore. They jump from game to game with blatant disregard for actually interacting with that education app that you researched and asked all of your mommy friends for advice about before installing. Ack! How did he get into my mail... don't delete all of my apps!

The Holiday Patrol

aka The Black Friday Troupe

Black Friday 2004

Black Friday became a thing for me in 1997 when the Furbys first came out and everyone wanted them. I didn't really want one, I thought they were creepy, but I fell for the quest.  My aunts always went out on Black Friday and I never understood it until 1997,  I had my own car and I went out long before dawn to drive past a toy store and laugh at the people waiting in line for a silly toy.

eek shopping on Thanksgiving!?

I used to be one of those folks who was adamantly against stores opening on Thanksgiving. Arguably, it still takes the fun and sport out of getting the sales but that's not my point here. All you hear in the anti-Thanksgiving shopping contingent is that it is unfair to the store employees to take them away from their families and it should wait until Friday. And they are wrong.

Fitbit vs Jawbone vs Fitbit

I've had a fitbit for years and have always enjoyed a gentle competition with my husband (which I ALWAYS lose) for steps. I started with the Ultra and when it fell apart I upgraded earlier this year to a new One. Earlier this month my company gave away Fitbit Flexes as part of a wellness program and I picked up a Jawbone Up just to see how it compared.  Here are my observations.

Fitbit One

It is a similar form factor to the Ultra that I was used to wearing, the fitbit itself is much smaller and can either be carried alone or put into a silicone case and clipped to your waistband or pocket. I use mine in the case. I originally ordered the burgundy but decided immediately that I hated the color and switched for a black, it's much better. Charging it is more of a pain than the ultra, you have to take the fitbit out of the case to plug it into the USB charger then put it back in when you want to wear it. It normally takes me about 20 seconds to get it back in snugly.  The display is an upgrade as well, it has a much clearer screen and tracks the same data as my ultra. All in all, I am pleased with the One.

$44 peanut butter

I spent $88 at Target. No, that's not hard to do nor uncommon, but I went there for two things: peanut butter and drain cleaner. It was to be a quick trip, I was going to return some hand soap and pick up those two items and speed away without admiring all of the wonderful things I could dress O in, decorate my house with or crafty things I could make. Until the cashier read the total I thought i had done a good job.

The Basement

The basement. A room where things go when they shouldn't be in the "living space". A dungeon of crap. If we didn't have a small food storage and a drink fridge in there I'm pretty sure it'd look like one of those houses on Hoarders, Buried Alive.

I have to do something.  With a 17 month old that's a really hard thing to do.

Option 1: Take a day off of work and clean it.
Honestly, I'd love to do that, I think I could get a lot done.  The downside is J works right next door to the basement so my banging and moving things around would really disturb him.  No go.

Reverse Hair Washing?

I read an article a few weeks ago about reverse hair washing and was intrigued. I guess I'm the type of person who will keep trying new hair things until I find the method that just works. Basically, what you do is use conditioner first THEN wash with shampoo.

This makes no sense, right? Will my hair still be soft and moisturized? Of course, I was skeptical too but I thought I'd give it a try. The worst that could happen is a day or two of bad hair days and I'd just go back to the old way.  Supposedly using the conditioner first will moisturize your hair and the shampoo will clean it and remove a lot of the conditioner residue without removing the benefits of the conditioner.

16 months and Cry It OUT (CIO)

H has never been too into the idea of cry it out, so many nights have been spent by me not sleeping trying to get O to sleep. Every once in a while H would decide that it was silly for a kid so old to still not be able to go to sleep on his own and would send him to bed and let him cry.  He'd cry from anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour before he'd fall asleep, but then he'd actually sleep for a long time. It was glorious! But we'd never do it regularly so those nights were still few and far between. This week we changed.

I put O in bed and turned on his projector and put on Pandora to a classical channel and said goodnight. He was asleep in under 20 minutes. The next night it was the same thing, he was alseep in under 15 minutes. AND SLEPT THE WHOLE NIGHT. Last night he was asleep in under 10 but he woke up at 4:30. Still, he slept for almost 8 hours, that's AMAZING!

I don't like abandoning him in his bed to cry but he's only crying because he's angry, not because he's sick or hurt and he gets over it and goes to sleep quickly so I know he needs it. And he's actually getting good sleep too.  I hope we keep this up and things get better. My quality of life will significantly improve with a little more sleep I suspect.

Ham and cheesy bread

While searching the fridge for a lunch amongst the food we didn't really have we came up with this great little idea, ham and cheesy bread. It's super easy and surprisingly filling.

First we took a slice of Naan bread, our grocery store sells them in the bakery; I never knew they were so so delicious and versatile until recently.  We love making garlic cheesy bread. With this spin on ingredients it's close to the same thing with a completely different flavor. It's so delicious!

15 months Old!

O is 15 months old now, yay! That also marks the 15 month anniversary of me not sleeping.  I know it will end and he will sleep through the night, but I wouldn't be sad if that day came sooner than later.  Until he turned one he would wake up a couple times a night but fall back to sleep relatively easy and I'd put him back in his crib for a little while.

In January he started a new trick where he'd be sound asleep in my arms but would wake up screaming the instant he touched his crib mattress.  I'd go back to holding him and eventually it turned into me spending 80% of my night holding him on the sofa.  That was miserable.

Little did I know that it'd get better! Now he'll wake up after 2 hours and be wide awake wanting to play or scream for 2+ hours. Every. Single. Night.  It's been going on 2 weeks? 6 weeks? I don't even know how long it's been, all I know it's complete and utter misery.  I'm trying my best to not let my lack of sleep, I've been getting 2-3 hours a night now, affect my work and work around the house but it is.

I am at a complete loss as to what to do. We tried CIO and it was an epic failure, he's not made for it.  Last night I made a "nest" (really, just a pile of blankets) on the floor of the Awesomeatorium and slept there with him.  I say slept but you know, was tortured by being awake forever.
